(Phys.org)—By carefully arranging many nanoblocks to form pixels on a metasurface, researchers have demonstrated that they can manipulate incoming visible light in just the right way to create a color “meta-hologram.” The new method of creating holograms has an order of magnitude higher reconstruction efficiency than similar color meta-holograms, and has applications for various types of 3D color holographic displays and achromatic planar lenses.

The researchers, Bo Wang et al., from Peking University and the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, both in China, have published a paper on the new type of hologram in a recent issue of Nano Letters.

The pixels on the new metasurface consist of three types of silicon nanoblocks whose precise dimensions correspond to the wavelengths of three different colors: red, green, and blue. To enhance the efficiency for the blue light, two identical nanoblocks corresponding to the blue light are arranged in each pixel, along with one nanoblock for red light and one for green light.

The researchers explain that each pixel can be thought of as a “meta-molecule” because it is the basic repeating, subwavelength unit of the larger metasurface that constitutes the entire hologram. The meta-molecules enable the metasurface to control light in ways that are not possible without modern nanoscale design.

When red, green, and blue lasers illuminate the hologram, each nanoblock manipulates the phase of its corresponding . The researchers explain that a key achievement of the study was to minimize the interactions between nanoblocks so that the nanoblocks function almost independently of each other. Then by orienting the nanoblocks in different ways, the researchers could change the light’s phase manipulation, resulting in different holographic images.

“Our work provides an approach for realizing the almost independent manipulation of phase for different visible wavelengths in subwavelength resolution and in transmission mode due to the absence of interactions between nanoblocks within one meta-molecule, which allows for particular functionalities,” coauthor Yan Li, at Peking University, told Phys.org.

The researchers demonstrated that the nanoblock approach can be used to create two different types of holograms. In an achromatic hologram, the entire reconstructed image is in one color. By balancing the relative input of the three colors, a wide spectrum of colors can be achieved. In the second type of hologram, called a highly dispersive hologram, different parts of the reconstructed image have different colors—for example, a red flower, green stem, and blue container.

The new color  has a variety of potential applications where spectral wavefront manipulation is required, such as 3D color holograms, achromatic lenses, and anti-conterfeiting planar optical devices. The researchers plan to pursue these applications in future work.

“Based on this idea and approach, novel real planar optical devices may be fabricated to realize many novel or extra functions in the future,” Weiguo Chu at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology said.

11 Basic Rights of Women in Islam

Posted on

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) once said, “Such a woman when her husband sees her; she should please him and when her husband orders her, she should obey him and she should not adopt a manner about her chastity and property which should displace her husband” . The Hadith proves the importance of a husband in the wives’ world, but Islam also tells us the importance and rights of the wives in the husbands’ lives.

Here are some of the rights taken from a reliable Islamic studies book:

1. A HUSBAND SHOULD HELP HIS WIFE IN DOMESTIC AFFAIRS

Thus proven, Islam gives women enough rights as a religion, it is then up to us, as men, to further their rights and help them attain the level of equality they deserve – because it is they who bear much trouble to make our lives happier and more comfortable. To our women

Complete List of HTTP Status Codes

Posted on

HTTP status codes or browser error codes or internet error codes are standard response codes given by web site servers on the Internet. It’s an message from the server to letting you know how things went when you requested to view a web page.

Whenever you send a request to the server, you always get a status code associated with the response.
The codes help identify the cause of the problem when a web page or other resource does not load properly.

Classes of HTTP Status Codes

Status codes are divided into 5 classes

  • 100’s: Informational codes indicating that everything so far is OK and the client may continue to the request.
  • 200’s: This class represent the success of the request.
  • 300’s: This class represent the redirection of the resources.
  • 400’s: Client error codes indicating that there was a problem with the request.
  • 500’s: Server error codes indicating that the request was accepted, but that an error on the server and not able to serve the request for some reason.

List of HTTP Status Codes

Information responses

100 Continue

The initial part of a request has been received and has not yet been rejected by the server. The server intends to send a final response after the request has been fully received and acted upon.

101 Switching Protocol

The server understands and is willing to comply with the client’s request, via the Upgrade header field1, for a change in the application protocol being used on this connection.

Successful responses

200 OK

The payload sent in a 200 response depends on the request method. For the methods defined by this specification, the intended meaning of the payload can be summarized as:

  • GET: The resource has been fetched and is transmitted in the message body.
  • HEAD: The entity headers are in the message body.
  • POST: The resource describing the result of the action is transmitted in the message body.
  • TRACE: The message body contains the request message as received by the server

201 Created

The request has been fulfilled and has resulted in one or more new resources being created. The 201 response payload typically describes and links to the resource(s) created.

202 Accepted

The request has been accepted for processing, but the processing has not been completed. The request might or might not eventually be acted upon, as it might be disallowed when processing actually takes place.

203 Non-Authoritative Information

The request was successful but the enclosed payload has been modified from that of the origin server’s 200 OK response by a transforming proxy.
This status code allows the proxy to notify recipients when a transformation has been applied since that knowledge might impact later decisions regarding the content.

204 No Content

The server has successfully fulfilled the request and that there is no additional content to send in the response payload body.
For example, if a 204 status code is received in response to a PUT request and the response contains an ETag header field, then the PUT was successful and the ETag field-value contains the entity-tag for the new representation of that target resource.

205 Reset Content

The server has fulfilled the request and desires that the user agent reset the “document view”, which caused the request to be sent, to its original state as received from the origin server.

206 Partial Content

This response code is used because of range header sent by the client to separate download into multiple streams

Redirection messages

300 Multiple Choice

The target resource has more than one representation, each with its own more specific identifier, and information about the alternatives is being provided so that the user (or user agent) can select a preferred representation by redirecting its request to one or more of those identifiers.

301 Moved Permanently

The target resource has been assigned a new permanent URI and any future references to this resource ought to use one of the enclosed URIs.
A 301 response is cacheable by default i.e. unless otherwise indicated by the method definition or explicit cache controls

302 Found

This response code means that URI of the requested resource has been changed temporarily. New changes in the URI might be made in the future. Therefore, this same URI should be used by the client in future requests.

303 See Other

Server sent this response to directing the client to get requested resource to another URI with a GET request.

304 Not Modified

A conditional GET or HEAD request has been received and would have resulted in a 200 OK response if it were not for the fact that the condition evaluated to false.

305 Use Proxy

This means requested response is now deprecated and must be accessed by a proxy. This response code is not largely supported because of security reasons.

306 unused

This response code is no longer used, it is just reserved currently. It was used in a previous version of the HTTP 1.1 specification.

307 Temporary Redirect

The target resource resides temporarily under a different URI and the user agent MUST NOT change the request method if it performs an automatic redirection to that URI.

This has the same semantic than the 302 Found HTTP response code, with the exception that the user agent must not change the HTTP method used: if a POST was used in the first request, a POST must be used in the second request.

308 Permanent Redirect

This means that the resource is now permanently located at another URI, specified by the Location: HTTP Response header.

This has the same semantics as the 301 Moved Permanently HTTP response code, with the exception that the user agent must not change the HTTP method used: if a POST was used in the first request, a POST must be used in the second request.

Client error responses

400 Bad Request

The server cannot or will not process the request due to something that is perceived to be a client error (e.g., malformed request syntax, invalid request message framing, or deceptive request routing).

401 Unauthorized

Authentication is needed to get requested response. This is similar to 403, but in this case, authentication is possible.

402 Payment Required

This response code is reserved for future use. Initial aim for creating this code was using it for digital payment systems however this is not used currently.

403 Forbidden

The server understood the request but refuses to authorize it. It means the client does not have access rights to the content so the server is rejecting to give a proper response.

404 Not Found

The server can not find requested resource. This response code probably is most famous one due to its frequency to occur in the web.

405 Method Not Allowed

The method received in the request-line is known by the origin server but not supported by the target resource.

406 Not Acceptable

This response is sent when the web server, after performing server-driven content negotiation, doesn’t find any content following the criteria given by the user agent.

407 Proxy Authentication Required

Similar to 401 Unauthorized, but it indicates that the client needs to authenticate itself in order to use a proxy.

408 Request Timeout

The server did not receive a complete request message within the time that it was prepared to wait.

409 Conflict

The request could not be completed due to a conflict with the current state of the target resource. This code is used in situations where the user might be able to resolve the conflict and resubmit the request.

410 Gone

This response would be sent when requested content has been removed from the server and that this condition is likely to be permanent. If the origin server does not know, or has no facility to determine, whether or not the condition is permanent, the status code 404 Not Found ought to be used instead.

411 Length Required

Server rejected the request because the Content-Length header field is not defined and the server requires it.

412 Precondition Failed

This response code allows the client to place preconditions on the current resource state (its current representations and metadata) and, thus, prevent the request method from being applied if the target resource is in an unexpected state.

413 Payload Too Large

The server is refusing to process a request because the request payload is larger than the server is willing or able to process.

414 URI Too Long

If the server refusing the request because the URI requested by the client is longer than the server is willing to interpret.

415 Unsupported Media Type

The media format of the requested data is not supported by the server, so the server is rejecting the request.

416 Requested Range Not Satisfiable

The range specified by the Range header field in the request can’t be fulfilled; it’s possible that the range is outside the size of the target URI’s data.

417 Expectation Failed

This response code means the expectation indicated by the Expect request header field can’t be met by the server.

421 Misdirected Request

The request was directed at a server that is not able to produce a response. This can be sent by a server that is not configured to produce responses for the combination of scheme and authority that are included in the request URI.

426 Upgrade Required

The server refuses to perform the request using the current protocol but might be willing to do so after the client upgrades to a different protocol.

428 Precondition Required

The origin server requires the request to be conditional.

429 Too Many Requests

This code is generated when the client sent too many request in a given amount of time.

431 Request Header Fields Too Large

The server is unwilling to process the request because its header fields are too large. The request MAY be resubmitted after reducing the size of the request header fields.

451 Unavailable For Legal Reasons

The user requests an illegal resource, such as a web page censored by a government.

Server error responses

500 Internal Server Error

The server encountered an unexpected condition when it doesn’t know how to handle and prevented it from fulfilling the request.

501 Not Implemented

The server does not support the functionality required to fulfil the request.

502 Bad Gateway

This error response means that the server, while working as a gateway to get a response needed to handle the request, got an invalid response.

503 Service Unavailable

The server is currently unable to handle the request due to a temporary overload or scheduled maintenance, which will likely be alleviated after some delay.

504 Gateway Timeout

The server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, did not receive a timely response from an upstream server it needed to access in order to complete the request.

505 HTTP Version Not Supported

The server does not support or refuses to support, the major version of HTTP that was used in the request message.

506 Variant Also Negotiates

The server has an internal configuration error: the chosen variant resource is configured to engage in transparent content negotiation itself and is therefore not a proper end point in the negotiation process.

507 Insufficient Storage

The method could not be performed on the resource because the server is unable to store the representation needed to successfully complete the request. This condition is considered to be temporary.

511 Network Authentication Required

The 511 status code indicates that the client needs to authenticate to gain network access.

Artificial Kidney

This New Artificial Kidney Eliminates The Need For Kidney Dialysis

Kidney

Kidney failure has been a major problem faced by the patients in the recent years and the pain they go through during this period cannot be described in words. There have been several cases over the years where people have lost their lives owing to kidney failure, some of which includes the big names in the world. The biggest headache for the doctors is not only to find a match but also to find a donor who is willing to donate his/her kidney to the patient. The National Kidney Foundation estimates that over 1 lakh patients are waiting for the kidney donors to help them and this list increases by over 3000 names every year.

It is sad to note that an average patient needs to wait for over 3.6 years for a kidney transplant. The patient has to go through dialysis during the period between kidney failure and kidney transplantation. The statistics reveal how deadly the problem actually is, it is seen that only one in three patients are able to survive past the 5-year mark without going through transplantation. Though the situation seems to be really dangerous for the patients to be in, all of it could change if the scientists are successful in developing world’s first artificial kidney kit.

The scientists are developing a bio-hybrid kidney which will make use of the living kidney cells along with specialized microchips which will take assistance from the human heart to filter out waste from the blood-stream. To help the patients go through transplantation without having to wait for the donor or to wait for a match William Fissell from Vanderbilt and Shuvo Roy have started the kidney project. These two scientists who are currently serving at the University of California, San Francisco say that the artificial kidney can put an end to the problem faced by people all over the world and this could turn out to be one of the important devices in the world.

Fissell explains that the artificial kidney is developed after a lot of thought and they have tried to emulate Mother Nature’s 60 million year’s research and development. He claims that the artificial kidney can easily distinguish between the waste chemicals and nutrients which are important to be supplied all over the body. He is of the opinion that the kidney developed in the research lab can be inserted into the human body through a simple surgery and they have also found out that the artificial device works efficiently once it has been inserted in the body.

The artificial kidney developed in the laboratory has 15 microchips stacked one after the other which acts as filters just like an original kidney. The device will have living renal cells which will in time grow around the device and mimic an original kidney. The team of engineers and scientists are currently working diligently to make sure the device will work just like a real kidney. They are also testing every part of the device to verify that the blood runs through the device without any hindrance.

The happy news is that everything is going according to plans so far and there has been no rejection too. Though the human trials are yet to be started, the research shows that this device really could bring a positive change in the lives of affected people. The device has given promising results in the early stage of research and it is hoped that one day this device could eliminate the need for dialysis among the patients. Do share this amazing news with your friends all over the world.

Miracle and Challenge of the Quran

Posted on

Miracle and Challenge of the Quran

“We shall show them Our signs on the horizons and within themselves until it will become clear to them that it is the Truth. Does it not suffice that your Lord is Witness over all things?” Qur’an:41:53.

Muslims are taught that throughout the ages, Allah Almighty has sent a prophet to every nation as a Warner and a bearer of glad tidings. Each Prophet was wisely selected by Allah in order to be the best person for the job. He was then provided by Allah with miracles as proof of his truthfulness and his message. These miracles were wisely selected by Allah in order to be in the same field as that which these people excelled in so that they could fully comprehend the magnitude of these miracles.

For instance, the people during the time of Moses excelled at magical trickery. Their rulers used to surround themselves with the most powerful of these wizards as a sign of power. This is why Allah made the miracles of Moses (as) similar to their magical trickery (changing a stick into a snake, parting of the sea… etc.) but of a much greater magnitude than anything they could ever hope to accomplish. For they were not tricks, but actual physical miracles.

The people at the time of the Prophet Jesus (as) excelled in matters of medicine. For this reason, his miracles were of a medical nature (raising of the dead, healing of the blind…etc.), but of a degree that they could never hope to imitate. Similarly, one of the major miracles of Islam was a new and unheard-of type of literature similar to the Bedouin’s poetry but far beyond anything they could ever hope to match. Although they did indeed try. This new literature was called “The Quran.”

The Arabic language, as can be attested to by any of it’s scholars, is a very rich and powerful language. The Bedouin people of the Arabian desert were, in general, illiterate people of very little scientific knowledge. The thing that set them apart, however, was their mastery of poetry. Spending their days as they did in the desert watching their sheep graze got quite boring. They alleviated their boredom by continually composing and refining poetry. They would spend entire years composing and refining their poetry in anticipation of a yearly face-down of the poetic compositions of their peers from all over the country. The fact that they were illiterate forced them to also train themselves in the memorization of works of literature to such an extent that they were able to memorize complete works from a single recitation. Even in matters of leadership, one of the major criteria for selecting the leaders of the various Bedouin tribes was the individual’s prowess in literary composition and memorization.

When Muhammad (saws) first became the prophet of Islam, he presented his people with a challenge: “compose a literary work on a par with this Quran that I have brought you and you will prove that I am a liar.” They could not. The Quran continued to reduce it’s challenge until the challenge finally became: “compose only a single verse comparable to this Quran and you will have won.” They still could not. This in addition to the fairness, justice, and logic of the Quran eventually won them over and slowly more and more people became Muslims.

Many claims have been made against Muhammad (saws) in that day and this. Among them are the claims that he was a lunatic, a liar, or deceived by the devil. If Muhammad (saws) was a lunatic or a liar then we have to wonder how all of his prophesies came true?. Further, if he was a deceived by Satan then we are faced with another problem. For we know that all Muslims are taught that when reading the Qur’an to first begin with the words “I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed one.” and then follow this up with the words “In the name of Allah, Most Beneficent, Most Merciful” So, we have to wonder if Satan would “inspire” a man to teach mankind to seek refuge in God from Satan? Indeed this is the exact same accusation which was made against Jesus (as). Let us read how Jesus responded to this claim:

“But some of them (the Jews) said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub (Satan) the chief of the devils. And others, tempting [him], sought of him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house [divided] against a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.”  The Bible: Luke 11:15-18

It has been the case throughout the ages that with all previous Prophets, their miracle was separate from their book. Although we may claim that we have the “Torah” of Moses, still, it is not possible now to bring Moses’ (as) staff and see it perform miracles as it did in his time. Similarly it is not possible today to see Jesus (as) raise the dead as he did so many centuries ago. However, since the message of Islam was the final message of God to mankind, therefore, the book of Islam itself was made the main miracle of Islam. It was also promised to renew it’s challenge to mankind throughout the ages.

What does this mean? Nowadays, the number of people who can appreciate the literary content of the Quran has dwindled and this challenge no longer has the same impact it did fourteen hundred years ago. However, as we have seen in the verse quoted at the beginning of this chapter, Allah Almighty has promised to continually renew the challenge of the Quran throughout the ages. So how will it be renewed?

Recently, a new field of study has opened up to scholars. People nowadays are fascinated with science. This is the age of technology and scientific discovery. For this reason, mankind has begun to study the religious scriptures of humanity from a scientific point of view in order to challenge the scientific claims made in these scriptures. Many works have been published on this topic.

As mentioned previously, Muhammad (saws) lived among tribes of illiterate Bedouins. He himself was also illiterate. These people used to live extremely simple lives. Most of them were Nomads who traveled from place to place depending on where they could find grass for their sheep to graze. When Muhammad (saws) brought them the Quran, the believers found in the Quran the command to go out, seek knowledge, and to learn, learn, learn. A few centuries later, once the Islamic nation became firmly established, Muslims began to fulfill this command of the Quran and this resulted in one of the greatest explosions of scientific advancement mankind has ever seen. All of this was going on during a period that the West calls “The Dark Ages,” wherein the scientists of the West were being persecuted and killed as sorcerers wizards and witches. During this period, Muslim scholars introduced into the world such things as:

* Mathematical evolution of spherical mirrors
* Rectilinear motion of light and use of lenses
* Refraction angle variations
* Magnifying effects of the plano convex lens
* Introduced the concept of elliptical shape of cosmological bodies
* Study of the Centre of Gravity as applied to balance
* Measurement of specific weights of bodies
* Rule of algebraic equations
* Solutions to quadratic and Cubic equations
* Work on square roots, squares, theory of numbers, solution of the fractional numbers
* Solutions of equations of cubic order
* Wrote on conic geometry elaborating the solution of algebraic equations
* Determined the Trinomial Equation
* Avicenna’s “Canon of Medicine.” He is know as the Prince of Physicians to the West
* Wrote the first description of several drugs and diseases as meningitis.
* Treatment of Physiological shocks
* Expertise in psychosomatic medicine and psychology
* Al Biruni mentions 56 ( fifty six ) manuscripts on pharmacology
* Credited for identifying Small Pox and its treatment
* Use of alcohol as an antiseptic
* Use of mercury as a purgative for the first time
* First to describe the circulation of blood.
* “Holy Abbas” was, after Rhazes, the most outstanding Physician. His works were authoritative till the works of ibn Sina appeared
* Writings on Cosmology, Astrology, Music, Science of numbers and letters

* authorities on the theory of the system of homocentric spheres
* Prepared a calendar that was more accurate than the Gregorian one in use today.
and much, much more.

All of this began with a single illiterate Bedouin Arab from the desert fourteen hundred years ago. The book that was brought into the world by such a man, cries out to be studied from a scientific aspect
